AS Care Ltd. provide a wide range of domiciliary services to assist and encourage patient independence within the home. They have been providing care and support services for over twenty years, helping individuals live their lives as independently as possible. Their service users include a varying range of caring needs due to complex diseases including diabetes, amputees, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, dementia, and arthritis. The company presently employs 180 people, and their area covers Wakefield, Leeds, and Bradford.

Eight senior carers attended the IOSH Approved People Moving and Handling Train the Trainer Course.

The course content included the topics below:

Where appropriate, each handling/transfer technique was taught using verbal prompting, with one person and then two people to assist.

For each specific disability the patient had, the trainer demonstrated to the trainees how to modify the handling/transfer technique. For example, if you were to assist a patient who has a left knee joint replacement to sit down, you would ensure that the left foot was placed further forward than the right to prevent excessive knee joint flexion and therefore pain.

Pre-mobility assessment, which involves testing the muscular strength of the lower limbs to see if the patient can weight bear were taught.

End of course assessment included a theory assessment paper that requires a 60% pass mark, a practical assessment using two pieces of equipment, and a PowerPoint presentation.
