Case Study Details

SGS College operates across six main campuses in Gloucestershire, Bristol, and South Gloucestershire. With over 4,000 full-time 16 - 18 learners, 2,000 apprentices, and 5,000 adult students, SGS has built strong links with employers to ensure its courses are relevant to future employment needs.

Fit4Work was delighted to deliver the IOSH Approved People Moving and Handling Train the Trainer course to SGS teaching staff. These participants were responsible for Health and Social Care Diplomas and also brought extensive professional experience as practising nurses.

To provide a realistic training environment, SGS replicated a hospital ward within the classroom. The space included:

  • Three profiling beds with screens
  • Mobile hoists and slings
  • Slide sheets
  • Stand aids
Theory

The theoretical elements of the course set the foundation for safe and effective people handling practices. Topics were introduced with group discussion and reflection to ensure the content was fully understood and could be applied to teaching environments.

Key areas included:

  • Reasons for managing handling risks
  • Current Health and Safety Executive (HSE) statistics on musculoskeletal injuries
  • Relevant legislation for healthcare environments
  • Anatomy and spinal alignment
  • Lever systems and their impact on manual handling
  • Efficient movement principles
  • Controversial handling techniques - what is safe and what should be avoided
What Was Covered

The practical application of theory was central to the course, with a strong focus on preparing staff to demonstrate correct techniques to their own learners.

Practical Handling Techniques

Participants practised and observed demonstrations covering:

  • Sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit techniques
  • Moving patients up and down in bed
  • Transferring patients to chairs or wheelchairs using hoists
  • Supporting a patient from the floor (prompting and hoist use)
  • Walking with and supporting patients safely
Risk Assessments
  • On-the-spot dynamic risk assessments carried out by participants
  • Understanding TILE (Task, Individual, Load, Environment) principles in healthcare settings
Assessment

Fit4Work developed a tailored moving and handling competency assessment form to help SGS evaluate the skills of students before they entered clinical placements. This ensured learners were capable of safely performing expected roles in hospitals and care homes.

Course participants completed an end-of-course assessment, testing both theoretical knowledge and practical competence. Reflection and discussion were embedded throughout, ensuring that the course content was pitched at the right level and that objectives were fully met.

Assessment outcomes included:

  • Improved confidence in delivering people moving and handling training
  • Clearer understanding of risk management and legal obligations
  • Practical tools (competency assessment form) to evaluate student readiness for clinical placements
Summary

The IOSH Approved People Moving and Handling Train the Trainer course at SGS College successfully combined theory, practice, and reflective discussion. Delivered in a realistic healthcare setting, it equipped experienced staff with the skills and resources needed to train future healthcare professionals effectively and safely.
