Case Study Details

Marshalls Mono Ltd wanted to update and standardise manual handling awareness training across the organisation. By developing in-house trainers, the company aimed to:

  • Reduce long-term reliance on external training providers
  • Deliver training flexibly, as and when required
  • Ensure consistent training standards across all departments

To achieve this, Fit4Work was invited to deliver a two-day Manual Handling Train the Trainer course to a group of seven employees.

Theory

Angela, Director of Fit4Work, led the course. Since only two participants had prior training delivery experience, the course was carefully structured to build both subject knowledge and confidence in teaching.

A variety of teaching methods were used to engage all abilities, including:

  • Small group discussions
  • Case studies drawn from participants’ workplace experience
  • Quizzes and interactive questioning
  • Videos and PowerPoint presentations
  • Practical demonstrations and activities

This blended approach ensured participants not only understood manual handling principles but also felt prepared to deliver engaging and effective training themselves.

What Was Covered

The course content combined core manual handling theory with practical teaching skills. Topics included:

  • Reasons for managing handling risks
  • Relevant legislation
  • Latest workplace injury statistics
  • Anatomy and spinal health
  • Principles of correct handling
  • Risk assessment in practice
  • Efficient movement principles
End of Course Assessment

Day two focused on consolidating knowledge and putting new skills into practice. Each participant was required to:

  • Deliver a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation
  • Lead a practical teaching session
  • Sit a theory test
  • Create a lesson plan suitable for delivery to colleagues

All seven trainees successfully passed the course. Feedback confirmed that participants gained substantial knowledge in just two days, with several noting increased confidence in both handling techniques and teaching delivery.

Recommendations & Next Steps
  • Newly qualified trainers were advised to deliver sessions in pairs, providing mutual support until they gained full confidence.
  • Lesson plans developed during the course could be implemented immediately, enabling training to roll out quickly across the company.
Outcome

By investing in in-house trainers, Marshalls Mono Ltd can now deliver consistent, cost-effective manual handling training across its workforce. The course equipped participants with the knowledge, practical skills, and resources to train colleagues effectively, ensuring compliance and improving workplace safety standards.
