Case Study Details
Every Wednesday in May, Angela Hinton, the Director of Fit4Work, delivered the full-day Refresher People Moving and Handling Awareness training course for clinical staff, alongside the half-day Manual Handling Awareness training course for non-clinical staff.
Theory
The theory covered:
Regarding the practical aspect of both courses, the clinical staff underwent basic training in managing simple loads and patients. In contrast, the non-clinical staff received solely basic training in managing simple loads in the morning.
The picture below illustrates Angela demonstrating how to carry out a sit-to-stand transfer, with emphasis on foot and hand placement.

The clinical staff then practised standing up from a seated position.

Below are delegates practising sliding patients up the bed using a slide sheet.

Patients often fall and find themselves in confined spaces, such as between the toilet and sink. Angela served as a model for the delegates to practise using tubular and flat slide sheets for the safe and swift recovery of the patient.

Depending on the patient's mobility and abilities and the hospice's policy, patients may be assisted or prompted off the floor. The image below shows Angela being assisted off the floor and into a chair. If the patient cannot get off the floor independently, the hospice may utilize a Raizer chair or a mobile hoist. It is important to note that if the patient expresses pain or exhibits any signs of confusion, emergency services will be contacted.

End of Course Assessment
The training covers more than just the basics. Angela demonstrates the ‘how’ and explains the ‘why’ behind each technique to your staff, ensuring long-term injury prevention.
An end-of-course quiz was administered to assess the learning outcomes for all delegates.
